Telecommunications, also known as telecom, is the exchange of information over significant distances by electronic means and refers to all types of data, voice, and video transmission. Therefore, the most common form of telecommunications service is phone service that is done on wired or wireless standard.
Evolution of the Telecom Sector:
In the early 1990’s, the telecommunications sector dominated by the Department of Telecom (DoT) was seen, which was the only service provider. Also the first hunch of improvement came in 1994 when this area started to change from a monopoly in a competitive structure.

Telecommunication services – Use of fiber optics, satellite and internet as well as telephone, microwave communications and also radio – play an important role in the world economy. Also, a complete telecommunication system is made up of two or more stations equipped with transmitter and receiver devices.

Estimation of the revenue of telecommunications services around the world was approximately $ 1.8 trillion in 2010. Also, total workforce in telecom services is estimated to be around 6 million, of which 20 percent are women.
By December 2018, India is the second largest telecommunication market in the world, with around 1.20 billion subscribers. Therefore, the telecommunications market can be divided into three sections – Wireless, Wire-line and Internet services. In February 2019, the total subscriber base in the wireless market segment is 98.20 percent. BSNL and MTNL is the fourth largest and 100% government-owned PSUs.

Bharti Airtel Limited is a leading global telecommunications service with operations in 16 countries in Asia and Africa. The company’s headquarters are in New Delhi, India, the company is one of the top three mobile service providers globally in terms of customers.

As the result of the BSNL & MTNL , It has about 36.42 million line basic telephone capacity, 7.13 million WLL capacity, 95.96 million GSM capacity, 34,727 fixed exchanges, 1,17,090 GSM BTSs, 9,594 CDMA Towers, 102 Satellite Stations, 7,73,976 RKm. of OFC, 4751 RKm. of microwave network connecting 646 districts, 4519cities/towns & 6.25 lakhs villages. Total active users of the BSNL & MTNL are 119.66 millions.
